Starting yesterday afternoon, New York time, Mumbai (Bombay) came under a terrorist attack. Currently more than 100 people are dead and over 300 are wounded, with multiple hostage situations. I can offer nothing that the news is not giving, except a prayer for the souls of the deceased; a prayer for the wounded; a prayer that those who perpetrated this act face wrath of the God whom they so easily defame. Secrets of the Pilgrimage

The pilgrims came with honour and reverence, thanking God for His compassion and mercy, having escaped the toil and trial of the Hijaz and saved from the painful punishment of hell. They came to Mecca from ‘Arafat proclaiming “Labbayka! Here I am, at your service, O Lord!” They had performed all the rites of the pilgrimage and were now returning home, safe and healthy.

Boston beats New York

What a headline! This whole A-Rod trade has got Boston in an uproar, so I thought I’d give them a win over New York (namely me as the officially designated representative of the state.) I was working on a post about inclusion in the state, one which will probably still appear in some form, when today’s Boston Globe ran this op-ed about the French and the Bay Staters.

  3. In high school (North Carolina, circa 1977) a teacher tried to tell us that Muslims worship a different God from Christians, because they call their God Allah.
    I raised my hand and said “I’m an Arab Christian. My relatives are all Catholics. They call God Allah. Allah means God in Arabic.”
    She was extremely offended, told me I was wrong, and shut me up for the rest of class. I was only 15, too scared to argue further. I did go home to tell my Dad, who called the principal.
    Oddly enough, the teacher was a Greek-American who attended a local Orthodox church which my Lebanese relatives used to visit once they immigrated. Our Lebanese church is this funny Orthodox-Catholic blend. So maybe some of my aunties prayed next to this lady at some point. Even though Allah is the name of our God in Arabic.
