Today is the first of Muharram, the first 10 days of which commemorate the assassination of the beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Imam Husayn ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib.

God Hates Shrimp!
One of the favorite topics of conversation amongst my friends and I is whether certain foods are haram (forbidden, like pork) or makruh (discouraged). Our case study is usually lobster, but it seems God hates shrimp. Glad to see we’re not the only ones contending with this issue. Like I said before, we can’t see the Muslim the community in a vacuum.

Traditionally, Muslims read the Qur'an in its entirety over this time, in a section a day. The Qur'an is split into thirty sections, called juz', and one section is read each night. This year is the 11th year I am inviting people to tweet the Qur’an for Ramadan. I will be tweeting @islamoyankee. Starting in 2019, I'd like to expand the invite and encourage people share commentaries and art work.
