Yesterday was the birthday of the Prophet (Milad un-Nabi). I had wanted to do a lengthy post on the various world traditions associated with the celebration of the day. When I went on-line to try to pull resources about Egypt, Pakistan and Indonesia, all I kept getting were sites decrying the celebration of the Prophet’s birthday. I’ll have to stop reading this blog if you lead me into agreeing with the likes of Juan Cole. : (
Seriously though, I think Cole could have made his point without the reference to the Taliban and Islamists — seems gratuitous to me. Like we don’t have enough trouble. Nice, acceptable secular examples would have sufficed.
Don’t misunderstand me — I think the Congress egregiously overreached here and I’ve already sent email to the two Democratic congressmen In Maryland that voted in favor of this travesty (both from perfectly safe seats, but what the hey!).
