I’m sure everyone has heard of them. Just like black Muslims. They are newsworthy because they are not what you expect. Yadda, yadda, yadda. I think it’s interesting that this is in the news now. Growing up in NY everyone knew there were black Jews. Big deal.

The Sad State of Jerusalem
The New York Times has an article about the tension in Jerusalem over the coincidence of the holidays of Eid and Rosh Hoshanna. It is a sad state of affairs that what we celebrate here exacerbates tensions there. The article quotes the poet Yehuda Amichai who says: The air over Jerusalem is saturated with prayers and dreams like the air over industrial cities. Now it seems like the toxic air of industrial cities with prayers of anger and ignorance. God help us all. The Globe and Mail has a more Muslim-centric perspective.
City of Knowledge
The recent exchange between Haroon and Reid has got me thinking and churning and preventing me from working on my dissertation!. I was struck by Reids’ quotation of Jesus Christ (PBUH)saying: “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6 and then reflecting on my own Shia-Ismaili-Muslim religous education and the attribution of the following the following hadith to Prophet Mohammed (PBUH): “I am the city of knowledge and ‘Ali is its gate.” The similarities and implications are very interesting.
