NY Area Event: Shaykha Fest

Religion and Public Life series – Hussein Rashid. The methods of the Digital Humanities present an opportunity to think about the goals and methods  in the Study of Religion. The emergence of these new tools challenges the ways in which we consider academic work, and the premises around which Study of Religion is built. By broadening  the scope of what we can do with “religious” material, we can more broadly imagine what religion is.

Being the First: Reinventing Superheroes | Barnard College. Sana Amanat ’04, director of content and character development at Marvel Comics, created the first Muslim superhero with her own book series, Kamala Khan. Amanat joins Hussein Rashid, adjunct professor of religion at Barnard College, to discuss growing up Pakistani- American and what Barnard meant to her. The evening will cover the journey she took to create a female comic book character in a male-dominated field, why Ms. Marvel is so important right now, and what’s next for women in comics. 

Groups produce guide on U.S. Muslims | First Amendment Center – news, commentary, analysis on free speech, press, religion, assembly, petition. The new document, What is the Truth about American Muslims? Questions and Answers, is an attempt by the organizations to provide accurate information and delve into the law of religious freedom, the history of American Muslims in the United States, and misunderstood terms and practices, including Shariah.  Hussein Rashid, Hofstra University adjunct professor and Religion Dispatches associate editor, and Rev.
