Tweeting the #Quran – #Ramadan [Updated]

Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting, is approaching. We expect it to begin around August 21. Traditionally, Muslims read the Qur'an in its entirety over this time, in a section a day. The Qur'an is split into thirty sections, called juz', and one section is read each night. This year, I have been thinking it would be fun to tweet the Qur'an for Ramadan. Coincidentally, Shavuot came, and several people I follow on Twitter tweeted the Torah. Since that experience seemed to be successful, it further cemented my belief that this would be a good idea. More on Women and the Veil

This one is an interesting take on a non-Muslim woman who has to wear the veil in Saudi Arabia. I’m curious about somethings. Towards the end, she is on the sidewalk unattended by a male. Is that not a problem? She can’t be in the bank with her male escort, so she’s left unescorted outside? Also, isn’t the abaya supposed to be the thing that hides women? Are they be veiled and separated in a different room? I know all these things intellectually, but to read her story helps to highlight the contradictions. Progressive Scottish Muslims: Islam design tartan unveiled is far from representative. Islam and Muslims are not a monolith.. My view: But is ‘Islam’ a culture? In the same way that we can talk about our Scottish culture? If so, which Islam?  Which ‘Islamic’ country does this tartan represent in terms of all the Muslims in diaspora who live in Scotland?   Then this raises the question about whose Islam?  Is this a Shi’a, Sunni, Ahmadi, Alawi ‘Islam’ tartan?  Muslims are not a monolith and nor is ‘Islam’ — this is certainly not a progressive move
