A Conversation in a Mosque

A friend recently went to Turkey and the tour guide started explaining Islam. It’s actually pretty good, and the guide is funny. Of course, I have objections to both a five pillar definition of Islam and linking of religious acts as dependent on science, but overall it is fun. It’s also nice to have a Muslim, from a Muslim-majority country, explain Islam in a way that resonates with the way many of us understand our own faith. Turkey

Black Jews

I’m sure everyone has heard of them. Just like black Muslims. They are newsworthy because they are not what you expect. Yadda, yadda, yadda. I think it’s interesting that this is in the news now. Growing up in NY everyone knew there were black Jews. Big deal. Judaism

Tweeting the Qur’an 2011/1432

Ramadan is back. Time to talk about tweeting the Qur'an again. Last year's thoughts and rules: Traditionally, Muslims read the Qur'an in its entirety over this time, in a section a day. The Qur'an is split into thirty sections, called juz', and one section is read each night. This year, I have been thinking it would be fun to tweet the Qur'an for Ramadan. Coincidentally, Shavuot came, and several people I follow on Twitter tweeted the Torah. Since that experience seemed to be successful, it further cemented my belief that this would be a good idea.
