Four questions were posed to us in small groups. The questions are below, with my thoughts in brackets. Couldn’t capture everyone’s ideas, but feel free to answer in comments on your own.
Topic: Integration of Islam and the West
- What frustrates/angers/annoys/etc. most about the topic? [The question. As long we see a dichotomy between Islam and the West, others will as well. For the most part, I have to say, at least in the US the integration question seems to be coming more from the Muslim community. Those who want to reach out to us already accept religious identity and national identity can co-exist.]
- What are the problems unique to your country? [We are still struggling, as Muslims, to acknowledge our own diversity, and are looking for a voice to represent us.]
- What gives you hope/inspires you/etc. about the topic? [This will be the last time I have to deal with this question in this type of setting.]
- What is unique about your country that give you hope? [A fellow in the group made the point, and I agree with it, is that we have the freedom to be Muslim, and like many of the other freedoms and opportunities available to us here in the US, we don’t take advantage of any them.]
